Propane powers some of the most essential systems in your RV, including your furnace, water heater, stovetop, and refrigerator. Keeping the LP system in good working order means maintaining the right components across the full path from tank to appliance.

Our LP gas collection covers regulators, pigtail and supply hoses, quick disconnect fittings, propane tank level indicators, tank covers, tank bases, tank blanket heaters for cold weather use, and LP gas detectors and alarms. Brands include AP Products, MB Sturgis, Camco, MTI Industries, Marshall Excelsior, and RV Safe.

LP detectors should be replaced every five to seven years regardless of whether they appear to be working. Check the manufacture date on the back of your existing unit before deciding whether a replacement is needed.

Enhancing RV Safety: A Guide to LP Gas and CO2 Detectors

LP gas detectors and CO2 alarms are the unsung heroes of RV safety, standing guard against these threats. But with a myriad of options available, how can you be sure you're choosing the right protection for your home-on-wheels?

What LP gas parts does this collection cover?

This collection includes 115 LP gas components for RVs: propane tanks, regulators, hoses, fittings, LP gas detectors, tank covers, valves, and changeover assemblies. Whether you need a horizontal or vertical ASME tank for a motorhome or a DOT cylinder for a travel trailer, the parts here cover the full LP system from tank to appliance connection.

How do I know which RV propane tank fits my rig?

Confirm three things before ordering: tank type (DOT cylinder for most travel trailers, ASME for motorhomes), capacity in pounds or gallons (common sizes are 20 lb, 30 lb, 40 lb for DOT; 7-20 gallon for ASME), and orientation (vertical or horizontal). Measure your existing tank or check the data plate stamped on the collar. ASME tanks also require matching foot mounting dimensions to the chassis frame.

Do LP gas detectors need to be replaced on a schedule?

Yes. RV LP gas detectors have a sensor life of 5 to 7 years from the date of manufacture, regardless of whether the unit appears to function. Check the date stamp on the back of the detector. If it is past expiration, replace it. For related safety and electrical upgrades, see our RV electronics collection.

What maintenance does an RV LP system need before winter?

Inspect hoses for cracking, check the regulator vent for debris, verify the LP detector still functions, and run a soap-bubble leak test on every threaded fitting. If you are storing the rig in freezing temperatures, the LP system itself does not require winterization, but your plumbing does. See our RV winterizing kits for the antifreeze and blow-out fittings you will need.

Do propane regulators wear out?

Two-stage RV regulators typically last 10 to 15 years, but signs of failure can appear sooner: yellow-tipped appliance flames, sooting, a sulfur smell at the regulator vent, or appliances that will not stay lit. The regulator vent must always point down and stay clear of mud, ice, or insects. Replacement regulators in this collection are compatible with both DOT and ASME tank setups.

Does United RV Parts ship LP tanks and components?

Yes. Fittings, regulators, hoses, detectors, and covers ship standard ground. Empty LP tanks ship via standard freight or ground depending on size. Tanks ship empty per DOT regulation and must be filled locally after delivery. Orders over $100 qualify for free shipping on eligible items.

Can I replace LP gas fittings myself?

Most LP fittings use standard POL or ACME thread connections and can be replaced with two wrenches and yellow gas-rated thread sealant (never white plumber's tape). After any fitting work, run a soap-bubble test on every joint with the tank valve open and the system pressurized. If bubbles form, shut off the tank and recheck the connection. Call or text 817-984-1852 if you need help confirming the correct fitting size for your system.
